Loosen the agitator. Inside the agitator shaft (and underneath the dispenser) is a bolt that holds the assembly together. Loosen it with a half-inch socket. You can pull the bolt out if you have a magnetic tool, but otherwise, you can leave the bolt loose in the agitator for now. How to Replace Washing Machine Agitator Repair Kit. Shut off power and water. Disconnect the washing machine from electricity and turn off water supply valves to prepare for repairs. Remove agitator. There may be mounting bolts, tabs or clips holding the agitator in place. Use tools to detach it from the tub.
Look for the three 1/2-inch bolts on the transmission beneath the motor. Use a 1/2-inch socket and the socket wrench to remove the bolts. Grab the motor and transmission. Pull the entire assembly straight out of the bottom of the Maytag washer. This exposes the agitator shaft and the half of the clutch assembly attached to the transmission.
