Big surprise huh! Well what I found worked very well was to use a 14mm 12 point socket and a lot of extensions. With a little push, the socket fits snuggly around the outside of the lock mechanism and you can lower the spare tire. In my case, the socket stuck so well I could not remove it by pulling out the extensions.Received 489 Likes on 436 Posts. It's got to be a square socket - on the order of 12mm. I've assembled the tools and cracked it free with the lug nut wrench then used a drill to lower it. A drill/impact won't raise it though.
